A little update?

I don’t have too much to update…since nothing has really happened with my two little rabbits but I thought I would do a little bit of an update ๐Ÿ™‚ The weather has gotten a bit warmer and for Hiccup, who is outside in the shade of the house that’s fine. But for little Astrid, in the garage (because we haven’t got a new cage system up yet since I need a dropping pan) it has gotten pretty warm. I guess our garage is a super heater or something ๐Ÿ˜› I moved her inside this afternoon/evening when I realized how warm it was out there. I feel bad that I caught it so late, but tomorrow she’ll be inside in the warmer part of the day ๐Ÿ™‚ My niece loves it though because she loves to go visit the ‘baby bunny’ (she can’t really say Astrid) ย and pet her ๐Ÿ˜‰

About the cage system… I bought a cage rack system on sale and found out it was only for one cage which is annoying when the picture clearly shows two. Ugh. False advertising. So then I needed the wire cages for it- and found one for only $15 on craigslist! Awesome deal but I STILL need a dropping pan before I can move Astrid. It was an awesome deal but it opens on the top so I’ll have to make a door on the front before I can stack them, which kinda sucks, but its manageable. Hopefully soon we can get the cages arranged outside for the bunnies.

I’m still so excited for the prospect of little baby rabbits but I have to wait…about 2-3 months ๐Ÿ˜ฆ Hopefully it will pass by soon! Maybe I can get a countdown to put on the blog…hmmm.

Anyways, that was my update! Longer than I meant it to be but thats okay ๐Ÿ˜‰

Goodnight!

UPDATE:ย I added the count down in the footer ๐Ÿ˜‰ Now I can keep track of her age easier! And the date is sooner than I thought, only October! ๐Ÿ˜€

Updates & Helpful Discoveries

First off, I’ve finally posted the pictures and info about my herd( I don’t even think it can be considered a herd its so small lol :P) So you can check out that page and see my adorable babies, Hiccup and Astrid!ย

ย

I’ve been researching ALOT. You have no idea. I have the Storey Guide to Raising Rabbits which is very helpful and informational and I’ve been looking online and at blogs of rabbit breeders. I will continue my research for the 5 months it takes for Astrid to be old enough…I think I may actually be addicted to research. And rabbits. ๐Ÿ˜‰

ย

Also, I was looking online for Pedigree templates and I ran across Kintracks which is software for your computer (I have an older Mac Book so it was ‘unlocked’ free but normally $20) Kintracks is very easy to use but again time consuming. You can input all your rabbits info, and their parents grandparents etc. Also it has places to record sales, pairs, matings, and calender info(like when a doe should kindle) My favorite part though is the pedigree generator. All you do is click on the rabbit you would like a pedigree for and print it out! As long as the family line is already in there, its quick AND easy!ย

ย

By the way, Kintracks nor the Storey people are paying me at all for mentioning their names or anything, I just thought it would be helpful for other rabbit raisers!

~~Update on the rabbits~~

Astrid is adjusting to her new home very well! She loves being held, although she peed on me today. It was gross but it was to be expected I guess. Anyways, shes pretty social. She was a bit skittish at first but I started stroking her and then she was fine. She is a lot better than Hiccup who doesn’t really enjoy just sitting. He’s a pretty active little guy. Anyways the rabbitry I bought Astrid from said that their kits normally drink from crocks but she has adjusted to the water bottle very quickly.ย

I thought I might explain Astrids naming… Hiccup got his name from How To Train Your Dragon and Hiccup’s girlfriend on the movie is Astrid. I wanted to name her Silver Dollar but Astrid fit in with the theme so I just went with it ๐Ÿ™‚ And I thought it might amuse people when they read their pedigrees later on ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh! I wanted to mention the rabbitry that I got Astrid from. Its called Morgan’s Little Rabbit Patch or MLRP and its run by a girl and her parents. I wanted to include them here because I love what their doing, their prices are reasonable, and they are very nice. I am very satisfied with my purchase ๐Ÿ™‚ Their website is here,ย littlerabbitpatch.weebly.com/โ€Ž

Anyways, I’m going to sign off after that very lengthy post. Thanks for reading! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Tattooing Your Rabbits

Helpful Tattooing Technique for the future

Rabbitsteading

Good morning everyone!

Apparently, my writerโ€™s block has gone on longer than anticipated.ย  The update really is โ€œThe rabbits are all thriving, no new litters expected until 7/21 at the earliest.โ€ ย  So Iโ€™ve been struggling to write much in regards to that.ย  One litter is weaned and doing very well, the other batch of kits recently turned 4 weeks and will hopefully be weaned in about 2 more.

So that said, Iโ€™ll instead post on a topic Iโ€™ve now had the pleasure of starting to learn โ€“ tattooing rabbits.ย  I use a brand called โ€œStoneโ€, and as you can see from the photo it is a pressure type.ย  Personally I handle the vast majority of rabbit operations by myself (except nail trimming), and in my current opinion โ€“ I canโ€™t see trying to use a free-hand tattooer by myself.ย ย  Two of my rabbits have free-hand tattoos, and the advantageโ€ฆ

Hiccup the Escape Artist

I know I said my next post would be when I got my doe but…I couldn’t resist, the blog was calling my name ๐Ÿ™‚

ย

So I went on a 2 mile walk today and we passed the “Escapee Rabbit Patch” a patch of ferns and overgrown thorns etc. It has gotten its nickname thanks to Hiccup who likes to escape from the run attached to his hutch (somehow he claws his way out of the chicken wire- ugh!) and runs away to find his other rabbit friends across the road. The last time he escaped though, we found him in the neighbors thorny patch thanks to a call from them and had to coax him out of there. It was TERRIBLE. Anyways…we are pretty sure that on at least one of his excursions he met some ‘lady friends’ and you know what happens- they breed like rabbits. Two of these rabbits that I swear he has mated with always hang around his cage- probably trying to dig him out of there so he can have some more fun with them ๐Ÿ˜› We’ve even seen some solid black rabbits on our walks and we joke that they are Hiccup’s sons ๐Ÿ˜‰

ย

Anyways, I thought I’d share that funny little anecdote with you as I reminisced about my little escape artist to brighten your day- it brightened mine!

Beginning my Rabbitry

I don’t really know what to say in an introduction to my rabbitry so here goes….My name is Amanda and my rabbitry is named after my first buck, Hiccup. He will be the first breeding buck in my rabbitry soon! Also, for now we will only be producing Holland Lops (:

Hiccup is 1yr old now, I purchased him at 7 weeks from a breeder near Seattle. Now, on Tuesday I’m getting the second addition to my rabbitry, a doe that I will breed with Hiccup. Unfortunately I don’t have the space to keep both rabbits at my house so my brother will keep Hiccup at his home and I will keep my new doe. I’m really excited to get started on my rabbitry but I’m sad to let go of Hiccup ๐Ÿ˜ฆย

ย

I will post more on tuesday, and hopefully some pictures of both rabbits but for now I must retire to my bed. Goodnight!
